One paragraph, set in the “most legible typeface” you can name. Legibility is not in the font. It is a relationship between the font, the reader and the conditions. Move the conditions and watch the same type win and fail.
What is the most legible typeface? is a bad question; the well–posed one is “legible for whom, where, doing what?” This is the cleanest opening demo: the type is constant, and its legibility plainly is not.
Legibility was never a property of letters alone. It is an agreement struck between a shape, an eye and a moment: this size at this distance, this contrast in this light, this stillness or its absence. Change any term and the agreement has to be renegotiated. The typeface printed on this panel does not change at all. Everything else does.
